Stokes Hill Wharf is an operational wharf.
All visitors must:
Contact 000 immediately or raise the alarm with a wharf worker in the event of an emergency.
Land based fishing from Stokes Hill Wharf is popular year-round, especially for those eager to catch a fish without having to travel long distances from Darwin.
The dedicated fishing platform half way along the wharf viaduct provides opportunity for all ages to fish amongst 15 artificial reefs submerged in front of the platform. Other locations surrounding the main wharf car park area also provide opportunity during ideal conditions to catch pelagic species such as queenfish, trevally or tuna.
Fishing tour operators also depart year round with the option to fish wrecks and reefs in the harbour for jewfish or various reef species, and nearby estuaries for saltwater barramundi or mangrove jack.
The platform is open 24 hours, with sufficient lighting, wash-down sinks and rubbish disposal available.
The fishing platform was originally constructed in the late 1990s with three confiscated foreign fishing vessels and several large concrete pipes submerged to support land based anglers. The vessels were the Seoak, Horizon (25 metres) and Jaya Abadi (25 metres), however unfortunately they have disintegrated over time and are unlikely to be detected whilst fishing in the area.
In July 2020, 15 artificial reef modules were submerged in front of the facility with an approximate casting reach of 50 metres. The artificial reefs are designed to combine the best features of a natural reef with internal caves, cryptic habitat, vertical relief and upwelling of water flow as a habitat for marine flora and demersal finfish species.
The best time to fish is usually close to high or low tide. For tide times visit the Bureau of Meteorology 's tide predictions for Darwin.
Boats are excluded from fishing the area providing preference only to land-based anglers at the wharf.
Nearby parking is available at the wharf entrance on Stokes Hill Road or at the main car park on the wharf .
Certain areas of Stokes Hill Wharf are fishing exclusion zones with relevant signage on site to notify anglers. Onsite management can also assist with any enquiries during peak trading times.
